...oscar grant...

i don't need to tell y'all where i'm at with this... how far have we really come?(01-03) 15:34 PST -- The 22-year-old man killed by a BART police officer early New Year's Day was lying face-down on the train platform, his hands behind him waiting to be cuffed, when he was shot in the back, a lawyer newly hired by the man's family said Saturday.
Attorney John Burris said in an interview that a number of witnesses to the shooting at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland have told him Oscar Grant was posing no threat to the officer or anyone else when he was fatally wounded. The shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m. after police responded to a report of a fight on a train bound for Dublin/Pleasanton.
"If it happened the way the (witnesses) said it happened, he's on his stomach, his hands pulled up behind his back, he's compliant, the officer is standing over him and all of a sudden he shoots," Burris said. "The bullet went through his lower back, hit the ground and ricocheted through the upper part of his body."
The witnesses told him police handcuffed Grant after he was shot, but removed the cuffs just before news reporters arrived, Burris said. No weapons were found on Grant or anyone else involved in the altercation on the train.
Grant, of Hayward, died at Highland Hospital in Oakland several hours later. BART officials say the officer who shot him, a BART police officer for almost two years, has been placed on administrative leave during an investigation. He has not been publicly identified.
...Burris said BART police stopped the fight and took Grant and several others into custody. Officers were armed with stun guns as well as pistols, Burris said, and a witness said Grant cried out, as he lay on the platform, "Please don't Tase me, I have a 4-year-old daughter."

maaaaan... i've been taking charge of my online game. i single-handedly put together the splash/home page for www.bambu.la and i've now linked the blog up -- but i can't get these comments to work and it's kind of annoying me. so, bear with me loyal readers, i'm working on it. until then, please hit me up directly at bambu@bambu.la and we can talk y'all (but, don't hit me with no bullshit -- keep it solid).
what... did... i... do today? i woke up pretty early and shot over to fatgums' studio to finish up our project ("a day in the life" -- working title) and the session went well. knocked out a bunch of shit.
then shot over to the studio to record some stuff with the homies, u-n-i out of inglewood. these dudes are making major noise without a major label deal. really dig their vibe! big up to my brother chris london, thurz, y-o, glen and ro for making me feel comfortable in the studio. look out for the mixtape hosted by mick boogie and the album dropping shortly afterward!
then we shot out to the derby for my favorite spot, the derby with dp sound. ran into a gang of homies (too many to name) like trek life, blue boy, phers, mark luv, like, mega, mils... so many folks out. got to catch diz gibran's set -- you'll be hearing more from this dude -- trust.
here's a little year end wrap up for hip hop official -- big up to my folks over at hho! big things in 2009...
alright, sleepy time!

...steal this album -- or not?
here's one: "when is bootlegging somebody's shit okay?" hmmm... this is a question i've never really had to be on the receiving end of, because before "...exact change..." my albums have sold pretty good and didn't really fall into the hands of bootleggers to the extent that "...exact change..." has.
i released the album for my die-hard fans on september 11th, and then did the hard publicity push in november. literally, 6 hours after the album "dropped" it was on every major bootleg site from the uk to the americas. now, at first, i didn't really trip, because to be honest, i believe that my fans are loyal and that they'd put that money in my pocket in appreciation for the work i put in. i think in the end, my fans did in fact support and cop the album -- it's the would-be fans and the people on-line who were too afraid to take a chance on a dude they'd never heard of before that just went ahead and downloaded the joint. so, we got with the carriers like megaupload, rapidshare and zshare to have them load a virus on the files (nothing serious, just a virus that'll infect your music carrier and possibly erase all your music)... i'll explain.
i don't have a big multi-million dollar corporation behind me to take care of the expenses that go into recording, promoting and manufacturing an album -- all that comes from my manager and business partner kat carrido and myself. we're not rich and we don't "make a killing" doing this, and we don't need to be... that's why we're not with a major label. we prefer the control we have with the music we make for y'all and we like the freedom to make our own creative and business choices with our projects, so we keep it all independent.
so, with that said, i go back to the question posed, "when is it okay to bootleg somebody's shit?" i'll leave that up to y'all... when me and all my counterparts were just making music at the homie's crib and pressing them shits up at kinko's, i would've said, "fuck it, bootleg anything on a major label!" but, now a lot of my friends are on major labels and i can see how bootlegging can potentially hurt their pockets as well... so, to my tried and true dedicated bootleggers, i ask that you start by doing a little research and finding out who's putting the money up to get that music made and brought to the masses... then, of course, if you like the music and you believe in the artist, put $10 behind that shit (that's one drink at some bars, homie).
support independent music.
